DAY 1 OF MY UK ADVENTURE

I left home yesterday for a ten-day adventure in the UK. My first trip across the pond. The excitement I started with quickly dimmed when our flight to Atlanta was delayed. 

After we boarded, we sat on the tarmac for an hour. All flights heading into Atlanta were on a stop-hold due to storms in the Atlanta area. A fifty-six minute flight turned into a two-hour flight as we circled the city. We arrived just as the plane to London closed its doors.

Now what?

We were told the 10:30 PM flight was oversold, but we could try standby. If that didn’t work, Delta booked us on a 10:45 PM flight Sunday (24-hours later).Whoopee. 

Getting through to Delta on the phone was impossible. My daughter checked flights on-line. It was too late to get out of Atlanta to another city with connecting flights to London. Our best option was to get to JFK at noon today and catch a 6:30 PM flight to London. I’m not sure what time it arrives, but according to my biological clock, it will probably be in the middle of the night.

Everyone says “don’t go to sleep,” but I don’t know if I can do that. I’m running a 5K (the egg & sperm race) later in the day.

(The run will leave the ExCeL congress centre at 6.00 pm on Monday and follow a 5k path along the riverside - a wonderful chance to see this rejuvenated part of London from a close perspective.)

I think the secret to surviving unexpected delays and itinerary changes is attitude. As long as Ken and I remain calm, we can keep a smile on our face. I’ll remember that when we get to the airport and hear that our next flight has been delayed due to storms.
